Pro Bono

Basic Principle

  • Contract for Pro Bono Work
When Gong-Gam (part of the Beautiful Foundation), the Korean Public Interest Lawyers’ Group, was established in 2006, HMP was the first law firm to contact Gong-Gam to regularly work on ten pro bono projects by providing the retainer fee for one attorney.
In January 2008, HMP made an agreement with the Joongang Institute for the Protection of Children and Youth to help prevent child abuse and neglect by regularly offering group programs to provide legal counsel and litigation support for the staff.
  • HMP Family Counseling Institute
The HMP Family Counseling Institute is an affiliated institution for HMP’s pro bono activities, which was opened on March 19, 2007 with the support of Mr. Ki-Hong Song, former Chief Justice of the Family Court and currently of-counsel to HMP. To help provide relief to those in need, the Institute provides various forms of assistance, including psychiatric counseling to improve individual mental health, and the facilitation of conflict resolution among family members. All counseling services are provided free of charge. (http://www.hsfamily.org)
  • Contributions and Support
HMP has been donating to a number of orphanages and nonprofit organizations that provide financial scholarships for children of parents who are incapacitated or deceased to complete their education. Also, HMP has been contributing over the years to the indigent support program administered by the Korean Bar Association (“KBA”).
  • Public Interest Litigation
HMP has been representing 350 victim family members against Air China in connection with the aircraft accident at Busan-Gimhae International Airport, and the case is still in the process of being resolved.
HMP has been taking active steps to aid low-income fisherman in a number of litigation processes on behalf of the Committee of Oil Spill Recovery since the 2008 Hebei Spirit oil spill off the west coast of Korea.
  • Legal Education and Training
Since 1999, HMP attorneys teach an international contract course every fall term at the Judicial Research and Training Institute (“JRTI”), which is run by the Supreme Court of Korea. The HMP attorneys who have participated in the pro bono teaching at the JRTI volunteered their time, effort and talent to train young judicial/legal trainees.
